There is plenty of information and facts on the Internet about TMJ. However, it’s important to be able to differentiate the truth from the myth!

Myth 1: Surgery is the Only Treatment

While surgery is indeed an option to fix TMJ disorders, it is not the only answer! At Athens Oral Surgery Center, we have different levels of treatment depending on the severity of the problem. Treatment options include:

  • Injections: Corticosteroids, a type of steroid hormone, are injected directly into the jaw joints and are beneficial in relieving pain and inflammation.
  • Medication: Ways to eliminate your pain include pain relievers, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, or sedatives.
  • Surgery: If your TMJ disorder is severe, restructuring of the jaw may be the only solution. However, Dr. Tomlinson and the team will talk with you extensively about your options and treatments.
  • Therapy: If we believe therapy can work for you, we will teach you stress management techniques to help relieve the pain! Sometimes, oral splints are helpful or physical therapy can help relieve pain and strengthen the jaw joint.

Myth 2: TMJ Disorder Only Occurs After an Accident

While suffering whiplash from a car accident is a common cause for this disorder, it is not the only reason this disorder occurs. Other reasons such as a misaligned bite, stress, teeth grinding, or orthodontic treatment has been linked to those suffering from this disorder. After analyzing your jaw and taking into account your past medical history, Dr. Tomlinson may be able to pinpoint the cause of the disorder and help you take action.

Myth 3: If My Jaw Stops Popping, My TMJ is Gone

While a popping jaw is a symptom, it is not the only symptom. Many symptoms of the disorder include headaches, neck pain, backaches, loss of balance, and others. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact our office immediately to find relief.
